Sarah Mäkelä

A secret rogue division of MAX Home Security needs to be dealt with. They're making drugs that give humans supernatural powers. Not good when the supernatural isn't supposed to exist in the everyday world.

When MAX Home Security asks Ian and Hannah for their help, they're very reluctant. Unfortunately, MAX's legal team thinks it looks good for their PR to have Hacked Investigations involved, forcing Ian and Hannah's hand.

Aside from the case, Ian's headaches are worsening, and Hannah and Ian will have to rely on each other even more if they stand a chance of getting out of this mess alive.

An Interview with Sarah Mäkelä
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Sarah, thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Your featured book is Blacklist Rogue and is the third in your Hacked Investigations series. Where did you get the idea for this exciting series originate?

SM: Thank you for having me at TRS Blue, Holly! The thought of Hacked Investigations being a series only occurred to me after I’d finished writing the first novella, Techno Crazed. Cyberpunk (sci-fi) romance was a fairly new genre for me, which I came to really enjoy. I also fell in love with the hero and heroine, Ian and Hannah, as well as the supporting characters and the world they live in. So, it becoming a series came from me not wanting to let go of the new world I’d created.

HH: What can you tell us about this first two books in this series?

SM: The first book in the series, Techno Crazed, is where Hannah and Ian meet up after having been separated for several years. Hannah is a private investigator who receives a call from a former employee of MAX Home Security. The company isn’t just protecting people anymore. Hannah’s informant has proof MAX Home Security ordered the assassination of politicians who stood against the corrupt megacorporation, but he’s killed and an attempt is made on her life. The informant gave her the codename of a freelance hacker, which turns out to be Ian, the one man she’d never expected to welcome back into her life. They’re set on a run for their lives. Ian is a former employee of MAX as well as a technomage, so he’ll do everything in his power to protect Hannah as they try to take down the megacorporation.

Book two is Savage Bytes. Ian and Hannah are now working together at the private investigations firm, now named Hacked Investigations. They receive a call from a friend of theirs, a nurse who works at the hospital, who asks them about taking a case that’s been confusing even the police. The victims are being drained of blood and having their organs removed in a ritualistic fashion. Ian -- being the workaholic he is -- has to learn not to be so single-minded when it comes to their work, or he’ll lose Hannah again.

HH: How does Blacklist Rogue continue it and will there be more?

SM: Blacklist Rogue continues the series by bringing back MAX Home Security who tries to hire Ian and Hannah to prove the corruption the megacorporation is on trial for occurred without the upper management’s knowledge, but Ian and Hannah are reluctant. MAX’s legal team thinks it’d look good for their PR to have Hacked Investigations involved, so they force Ian and Hannah into it. Also, Ian’s been having headaches, which are getting worse, so Ian and Hannah will need to rely on each other more if they stand a chance of making it out of this mess alive.

Yes, I have at least two more books planned for the Hacked Investigations series.

HH: What do you like best about Hannah and why will readers relate to her?

SM: Hannah is smart, capable, but not perfect. She’s forgiving, but she knows when to put her foot down.

HH: What do you like best about Ian and why will readers love him?

SM: He’s strong, muscular, an awesome kisser, and amazingly knowledgeable. He’s also gifted with technomage abilities that allows him to control technology.

HH: What sort of research is required to bring this story so convincingly to life?

SM: The topics I researched for this story were all over the place. Everything from bullets to cubicles to subpoenas to acid rain. My first stop when researching is usually Wikipedia, and then I go from there.

HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

SM: I have at least three more stories coming out from Changeling Press for the rest of the year. Up next is Jungle Blaze, the third Amazon Chronicles story, and follow-up to Jungle Fire, which was nominated for a CAPA award. Later this year, I’ll have a Christmas story coming out, which I’m looking forward to writing.

HH: Where can readers find all of your works?

SM: Readers can find information on all of my works at my website:

HH: What would we find in your to-be-read pile?

SM: Kelly Armstrong, Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs (I’m reading River Borne right now), and Karen Chance to name a few.

HH: When you're not reading or promoting you like to __________?

SM: I like to play video games and computer games as well as watch movies with my husband.

Thank you!

HH: Thank you!
