An Interview with Laura Kaye
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Laura, thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Your featured book is In the Service of the King and it's a sizzling, sexy tale. Where did you get the idea for the story?

LK: Thanks so much for hosting me here at TRS Blue! In the Service of the King is a dark erotic vampire romance about a vampiric feeding ritual a vampire warrior king requires but loathes. Vampires have always been my first love as a reader and a writer, so I’d been brainstorming a new sexy vampire series to dive into. This story came to me, as so many do, when I was driving very late one night on the way home from an urgent care center (I had horrible bronchitis). The lull of driving is often a great source of inspiration for me, and the story just started piecing itself together. I got home at midnight, found everyone else asleep, and stayed up til three a.m. writing the first twenty pages.

HH: What do you like best about Shayla and why will readers relate to her?

LK: Shayla is a young woman with a plan. She’s a dreamer even while she has her feet planted firmly on the ground. And she’s not afraid to stand up to a male who possesses incredible preternatural power and a royal heritage. There’s a lot to admire in Shayla McKinnon.

HH: What do you like best about Kael and why will readers love him?

LK: OMG! Kael McQuillan is a gorgeous, virile, tattooed Celtic vampire warrior king able to bring Shayla to orgasm during one very intense kissing session. What’s not to love?

HH: How did you go about creating the world where their story takes place?

LK: I wrote this as a stand-alone story, but with the hope I’d sell more and be able to make it a series that would have several things in common: a world in which, with the help of a small number of influential humans knows as The Electorate, good vampires battled the evil Soul Eaters, blood-addicted vampires who steal human souls by draining them of blood and eating their hearts; where there were seven remaining vampire warrior kings around the world; and where each story would be set in a new exotic location. Once I knew about that broader conflict, it came down to choosing a fun location, and Ireland was an easy choice since part of my family came from there (though I’ve never been!). Book 2 will be set in another place I’ve always wanted to go: Moscow, Russia.

HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

LK: I just learned that Harlequin is interested in more books in the Vampire Warrior Kings series, so that’s coming up later in the year! Also, I have another series based on the mythology of the Anemoi, wind gods the Greek associated with weather and the seasons. Book 2, West of Want, releases in April.

HH: You've won multiple awards so far. What does that do for your mind set as a writer?

LK: Yes, it’s been an exciting couple months! Well, winning awards is wonderful, of course! It’s very rewarding to have your work recognized, and certainly it helps provide an affirmation that can be good motivation. I’m just honored and thrilled and hoping I can continue to write books readers will love! Winning an award in no way makes you complacent you’ll be able to do it again, at least it doesn’t work that way for me.

HH: What goals have you set for yourself at this point in your career?

LK: First and foremost, I want to be a prolific writer and turn out a consistent stream of quality books. Second, I’d love to see my books on bookstore shelves—what writer doesn’t dream of that? Third, I’d ultimately like to be able to pursue my writing career as a full-time job.

HH: What sources of inspiration do you draw from for ideas?

LK: I draw inspiration from many sources. As I said, driving is wonderful for generating new stories ideas. I also find music lyrics very inspirational. But I have also drawn inspiration from events in my own life, overheard conversations, fairy tales I’ve read to my kids at night, and stories I read in the news.

HH: What's the best book you read in 2011?

LK: Oh, geez! I’m terrible at picking single favorites of just about anything! LOL Okay, I’ll play along. While a lot of books come to mind, I was probably most blown away by The Hunger Games.

HH: What are you most looking forward to in 2012?

LK: So many things! I have at least four book releases this year that I’m totally jazzed about. I’ll be starting a new project I’m co-authoring with historical fiction writer Stephanie Dray, and I’m nervous and completely excited to dive into that (and, yes, I’m purposely not saying more about it…for now! *winks), and I’m going to the Romantic Times convention for the first time this year, and cannot wait!
