Alice Brown

What does a young woman do when she finds herself trapped in an abusive relationship with a vampire? She runs straight into the arms of another vampire family!

Erica knows she needs to leave her abusive, alcoholic, vampire husband. But just how does one go about doing that? It’s not like she can go to the police and state; “I need a restraining order for my vampire husband!”

She has befriended a guy at college, and not seeing any other choice, asks him for help. Little does she know she is running away from one vampire, and straight into the arms of another!

Kevin O’Rourke is the leader of the VCTF (Vampire Crime Task Force). The only reason he sits in college classes half the day is because his team has been called in to make a major drug bust. When he sees the bruises on Erica, he knows she is in trouble. A little investigation reveals Erica is married to one of his own that has gone rogue. When she finally agrees to leave him, Kevin is quick to offer her shelter at his family’s home. The only problem is Erica doesn’t know what he and his family are. And she doesn’t know she is his mate. Hmmmm...

Reviews for Vampires Among Us

I loved the fact that the author but a lot of history about vampires (her version) into this story. The O'Rourke family even though vampire were the most sweetest loving "family". I fell in love with all the characters and how they were all eager to help and very accepting of Erica and her problems. Kevin O'Rourke if I could have a boyfriend or husband like him (yes I know he's a vampire) I would definitely snatch him away from Erica. There were only to characters I did not like (Shawn, and Philipe) but I guess every book has to have unlikable characters. While reading this Mrs. Brown actually had me visualizing every detail and every single interaction, and scene. I actually felt as if I was in her mind while she was writing this. If you love vampire genre books you'll love this one. This book has heartache, pain, mistrust, generosity, friendship, intrigue, love, lust, justice, and history. Can't wait to read the next in this series!!!!" -- Amy Bowens 9/4/2013

About Alice Brown

I am a retired military wife and homeschool mom. My husband retired recently after serving twenty-one years in the military, and is now home full time. I graduated our daughter from high school last May.

It was about three years ago that my daughter started urging me to write. “You have a great imagination for storytelling!” She insisted. I didn’t think so, but decided to give it a try. We spent many hours sitting at our local Wendy’s brainstorming the storyline for my books. And while she insists I have such a great imagination, she is the one that has given me so many fantastic ideas to incorporate in my books.

My books have become a family affair. My husband runs my website; I would have never been able to set it up and have it running smoothly. My daughter helps me keep up with emails, and keeps track of facebook and the website while I am writing. The fact that the family is involved in this endeavor makes it just that much more fun for me to write. We can be often found sitting around the table tossing around ideas for stories, or how a story can be improved.

When not writing, I love to read, and play games with the family. Friday night is family game night. I make homemade pizza and we play cards, board games, or WII tennis and bowling. I have broken at least ten WII tennis rackets from hitting the ceiling fan or furniture. I’ve even come close to hitting my own daughter! She doesn’t think it is very amusing, but still loves to sit on the couch and watch mom and dad at war.

An Interview with Alice Brown
By Holly Hewson for The Romance Studio

HH: Alice, thank you for talking with us at TRS BLUE. Your featured book is Vampires Among Us. Where did the idea for this amazing story originate?

AB: It was my daughter who originally gave me the idea. I had been trying to get her to start writing, in hopes that it would help her express her feelings. She soon turned the tables back on me and informed me that I should be the one writing. One cold, wet day while sitting at Wendy's eating lunch, Vampires Among Us was born!

HH: What do you like best about Erica and why will readers identify with her?

AB: Writing Erica's story was the best part of the book. Little did I know at the time, but it became a healing process for me. Feelings that I had buried deep and tried sweeping under the rug for the past 20 years, suddenly came rushing to the surface.

I think readers will identify with her because even though she comes to Kevin broken, beaten down; given enough time to heal both physically and emotionally, she evolves into a strong woman. If you look into spouse/partner abuse, the numbers are staggering. If anything, I hope to leave a message to those out there that getting out from under that type of situation is the first step to taking back your life.

HH: What do you like best about Kevin and why will readers love him?

AB: Kevin is a very strong individual, but he is so sweet, kind, and patient to Erica. I think readers will love his attentiveness and protectiveness toward Erica.

HH: How did you go about creating their world?

AB:With a lot of help from my daughter! She has a wicked imagination, and we found ourselves sitting at Wendy's once a week, plotting out this story until it all came together. There were several things I wanted to get across in the book.

First, the spousal abuse and how Erica took that step to get out from under.

Second: My husband is retired military, and I wanted to find a way of saluting the many wonderful men and women who risk their lives daily for us. That is why Pop Atkins history of the USS North Carolina came in.

HH: What else do you have in store for lucky readers?

AB: I have a short Christmas Vampire story (not part of the Vampires Among Us series) coming out Nov. 7. Book two of Vampires Among Us should be available close to the end of year/beginning of next year. I am also working on two shifter series, so 2014 proves to be a busy year!

HH: When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

AB: Three years ago when I finally took my daughter up on her suggestion. Once I started, I fell in love with it and haven't stopped since.

HH: Do you have appearances, in person or online, planned for the fall?

AB: We will be having a release party for The Music Box on Nov. 7. I am also scheduled for a guest appearance on justparanormalromance's blog on Nov. 8th.

HH: What inspires you in your writing?

AB: Life in general. I hear the good and bad (and yes, sometimes it feels like the bad is overshadowing the good) and put a paranormal spin to it. If I become overwhelmed with life, I simply disappear into my writing cave with a "do not disturb unless house is on fire) sign out and go into my wonderful, imaginary world where all ends well.

HH: What are you reading at the moment?

AB: Uggg, I am ashamed to admit this, but I have at least 10 books that I have started reading, just haven't had time to finish. Here goes the list:

Claiming Emma by Alicia White

Mated (The Wolf Pack) Avery Gale

Ava's Mate by Hazel Gower

Tarnished by Becca Jameson

How to date a dragon by Ashlyn Chase

Loving Lachyn by R E Butler

The Mating Hunt by Bonnie Vanak

Control Me, Wulfgang Style by Charlette Morgan

Shifting Magic by Lynn Leite

Wolf Creek by Jo Ellen

Duncan (The Protectors) by Teresa Gabelman

HH: Do you celebrate Halloween, and if so, how?

AB: Yes! Decorations are already up (at least the ones on the inside of the house; still waiting on hubby to set up outside). We usually make Halloween a family night. Popcorn, everyone's favorite candy and creative finger foods are the norm. Most of the time, we watch movies; preferring the old horror movies that when watched closely, makes you laugh. Technology has come a long way in the last 20-30 years, and it shows when you watch these old movies. If old movies are not on the agenda, I can guarantee Tim Burton or something with Johnny Depp is playing!

HH: Thank you!
