An Interview with Karen Erickson

HH: Karen, welcome back to TRS BLUE! Please tell us about your featured book, Fortune's Deception.KE: Well my heroine Brittney has just won the lottery with her two friends and coworkers. So of course she quits her job and goes on a little spending spree. But there's more than meets the eye with Brittney, she's not just a shallow beauty. The hero Charlie knows this and is willing to dig a little deeper if she'd only let him in...
HH: Your heroine is a winner and your hero is a financial advisor. Where did you get the idea for this wonderful story? KE: Well, I read an article in People magazine about a family who won the lottery. And it reminded me of when I was in a lottery pool years ago at work. We'd contribute $5/week every week and man, some weeks it was hard to give that money. I was broke back then. But I could only imagine the one time I don't make the contribution, they'd win! We eventually quit doing it but I think those memories and the magazine article got the wheels turning in my brain.
HH: What do you like best about Charlie Manning? KE: He's sweet and sexy and good with money. LOL He's always had tight control of his life and Brittney enters it and makes him do crazy, out of character things. And he likes it. He likes her and has no problem telling her that. She's the one with the issues.
HH: What did you enjoy most about writing this story? KE: liked creating the characters, especially Brittney. She's more complex than my normal heroine and I enjoyed that. I think it makes for a richer story. Man I hope it makes for a richer story.
Oh, ha ha I didn't even realize my pun. Get it? She won the lottery, it's a richer story...ok, bad humor. Sorry.
HH: What do you have in store for readers and fans this year?
KE: I have a couple of more releases with Ellora's Cave, Stolen Hearts is coming out on April 11 and Too Tempting releases May 22. I have a futuristic story coming out sometime in April I believe from AQP - Amber Heat titled Love's Prisoner. I'm part of The Vampire Oracle series at Cobblestone Press - Shadow releases August 1.
And I have my first print release! Spontaneous was an ebook release last August from Samhain and it will be a part of a print anthology that comes out on June 24th! That's exciting. :)
HH: Which of these releases is your favorite and why?
KE: Well I really enjoyed writing Too Tempting. It's an older woman/younger man story and it was so much fun. I fell a little bit in love with my hero, Kevin. I mean, who doesn't fantasize about some handsome young stud coming after you? Whew...
HH: What's a typical day like for you? KE: Okay it goes like this:
Woken up waaaaay too early by my two youngest kids. Get everyone ready for school, come home, read email, surf the web, blog hop, check forums, my myspace, you know, all the important stuff! I waste a LOT of time on the internet. But it's research right? Ha! Anyway, if I'm lucky I can get a little writing in during the day but usually I do the writer business-type stuff during daylight hours and write at night after the kids are asleep. Less interruptions that way.
HH: If you had a day to spend any way you like, what would you do?
KE: Um absolutely nothing. Wait. I'd sleep in, have a long, leisurely lunch at a favorite restaurant, take a nap and watch movies. Read a little bit. Spend quality time with my husband. Relax. That sounds heavenly.
HH: What do you think your fans would be shocked to know about you? KE: Uhhh, I don't know. That I'm actually rather boring? That I own too many cats? I'm not that shocking to tell you the truth. I just write shocking books. LOL Well, they shock the people from my past. I swear a lot of old friends from high school have found me lately and they all seem a little surprised that I'm writing naughty romances.
HH: Can readers and fans find you at any signings, conferences, or conventions this year? KE: I'll be at the Romantic Times convention in Pittsburgh in April so come find me there! I'll be rooming with Samantha Lucas - yay! She's my bud. I'll also be attending the RWA National conference in San Francisco. I must go to that since it's only about a three hour drive from where I live. That's all I have on the schedule for now.
