An Interview with Deanna Lee
By Holly Hewson, Marketing Director for The Romance Studio
HH: Deanna, welcome back to TRS BLUE. Please tell us all about your featured work, Exposing Casey.DL: Exposing Casey is my fourth print release with Kensington Aphrodisia and
it finishes up the gallery trilogy that began with Undressing Mercy. In this
two novella collection we explore the relationships of Casey Andrews and
Lisa Millhouse. The two women are really night and day. Casey is soft, easy
going and looking for love. Lisa is hard, mean-spirited, and the last thing
she wants is some man messing up her stuff. They both find themselves in
situations and in relationships that they really didn’t expect. Each book in
the gallery trilogy was an exploration for me, as a writer, into the depths
of woman’s path in life and in love. The entire theme of the collection is
about what happens when the trappings of our society are stripped away and
only the needs of two people are left to be seen.
HH: Where did you get the idea for each of these sizzling stories? DL: like to tell the kind of stories that I like to read. Ideas and the inspiration to create them come from some place deep inside that’s actually pretty hard to accurately describe. My best friend, Sable Grey, says that the passion to create is what makes a “writer”. Anyone can slap a few sentences together but it takes passion to make those sentences jump off the page and be more than just a few words strung together. As for the sizzling part, I’ve always preferred frank unfettered conversation I doubt it surprised anyone that knows me personally that when I started to write romance seriously that it was erotic. Human relationships can be primitive, raw and very intimate – for me the best way to describe those relationships is to use language that is just as raw and just as intimate.
HH: What did you enjoy most about writing them?
DL: The first time I used one of the “c” words—I was a little shocked. I’d always pretty much skipped sex scenes in the past because I figured what I would write would be near pornographic AND that there really wasn’t a place for that kind of language in romance. I knew nothing about the market, about ePublishing, and about was to come. As a person I’d really only used the Internet to play games at that point. Shortly after I decided that it was okay that I use the “c” word and all of its lovely naughty cousin words, I started to look around and see if there was a place for me online. I found a few (smile).
HH: What are you working on at the moment? What else can readers look forward to from you in the near future? DL: Currently I’m working on anthology called “The Games Girls Play”. It’s for Kensington Aphrodisia and will be in print. It tells the stories of three women and the men they make sex and love connections with. There will be a little bit of BDSM, some ménage, and a whole lot of fun! I’m really enjoying this one and I hope my readers will as well. Two of the three relationships will be IR.
HH: How do you balance writing, running a publishing company, and everything else in your life? <g>
DL: I told someone once that I live on espresso and ambition. It’s not far from the truth. Things can get hectic but I really enjoy staying busy and having “something” to do pretty much all the time. I’m not one of those people who can tolerate boredom.
HH: Within the romance genre, what do you consider your most important role and why?
DL: I’m an author first and a publisher second. Granted, being a publisher is a VERY close second and that “job” does take up the majority of my work day. Being a writer, a published author satisfies my soul in a way that nothing else ever will. If a lifetime can have “landmarks” — I would landmark my life by the first time I was published with Liquid Silver Books, the day Jessica Faust offered to be my agent, the day I signed my first print contract with Kensington, and that moment when I saw my first print book, Undressing Mercy in a bookstore. Those are my life landmarks.
My role as a publisher and the editor in chief of Cobblestone Press is a very different one. I’m truly honored and privileged by the trust other authors have in the dream Sable Grey and I share. We work hard, grow daily, and the first thing I do every morning when I get up is make sure that everything is “good” with that dream. We never slack on the details, keep our word, and honor our contracts – things that should be the norm but we all know better.
HH:What’s a typical day like for you? DL: Gosh- I’m almost afraid to answer this question but here goes!
- Turn on Yahoo Messenger – I keep office hours on the messenger for all contracted authors and staff at Cobblestone
- Check the Cobblestone Press website – make sure everything is as it should be. We have a great host and excellent server security but “things” can happen and I want to be on top of it as soon as possible.
- Check the Cobblestone Main Street forum
- Check my author website, blog, and MySpace
- Download my email (this can take upwards of 30 minutes and I have a cable internet connection)
- Check for customer service questions, file submissions, and respond to questions from authors and delete all of the penis enlargement ads I get (about 20 a day).
- Eat lunch, walk/feed my dogs
- The afternoon is devoted to different tasks each day from reading submissions to website maintenance. Just depends on the day.
- Find something to cook The Man aka spousal unit.
- I normally devote the last three hours of my “work day” to writing.
HH: What do you enjoy reading yourself? DL: I like mysteries. My favorite author is Elizabeth Peters.
HH: What’s your favorite guilty pleasure? DL: Café Vanilla Frappuccino (with 2 espresso shots) from Starbucks.
HH: Any vacation plans this year? DL: Vacations and sleep are mythological to me.... sort of like unicorns and werewolves.
Thanks so much for having me at TRS Blue!
HH: Thank you!
