An Interview with Kimberly Adkins
By Holly Hewson Marketing Director for The Romance Studio
HH: Kimberly, welcome to The Romance Studio. Please tell us about your featured work, The Medallion of Solaus. KA: It's hard to decide where to begin to tell you about this tale! Essentially, it is about an ancient legend born in the heart of Persia, as it fulfills the destiny of a cursed Djinn Prince. With no memory of who or what he truly is, he finds himself in a deserted fortress off the shores of the Mediterranean in exotic modern day Egypt. There he tempts fate a second time, with a mysterious woman who stirs his forgotten soul and awakens a passion that outlasted the centuries.
HH: Where did you get the idea for this tale of lovers reunited and of cruel fate? KA: It was late at night, the moon was waning full and, well, the History Channel was on =) There was a special about the influences of Greece on the architecture of the cities around the Mediterranean, and they focused on Alexandria in all of its ancient glory. I thought that place was so magical, and they brought to light other things about that part of the world, like the search for Atlantis in that area and I thought that would make a wonderful place for a paranormal romance. The naked archaeologist had done a special about Macedonia just the week before, and he talked a lot about Alexander the Great and his origins. I found the connection between ancient Persia and Egyptian lore very interesting.
HH: What sort of research was required to bring this work to stunning life? KA: That was the fun part! I got to read a whole lot about ancient Persia. I had always been a fan of Egyptian Lore, but Persia was more mysterious to me. I read about their gods, and in Particular the Fire God Atar. In legend, the Djinn are said to be born of fire, and I thought the god Atar would be particularly fitting. That is also why I chose the seal of Solomon to represent the Djinn symbol in my story, for the upright triangle represents the fiery male. By the way, the inverted triangle represents the watery female, but I think that's an M. Night Shyamalan movie, lol.
HH: What did you like best about Solaus? KA: He's mysterious and magical. I love his strength and character. I could never doubt for a second that he is every bit as noble and honorable as a Prince should be; having said that, he has some sexy blue eyes and thick, black hair. I'm guilty right there of adoring the strong, silent type.
HH: What are you working on now? KA: I'm really glad you asked! I have been working on a project that I really love right now. It is a Science Fiction Romance, called Darkenbane: The Fountain. And it goes a little something like this...
Holding the very key to the mysteries of her past, Jasmine faces the darkness of a Secret Order with only one goal in mind...
Control Time and Space to bring about a Judgment Day that would sweep through their world as well as all planes of existence tied to it.
With no knowledge of her past or who she is, Jasmine find herself helping a handsome stranger only to discover she crossed through a doorway into a world that seems hauntingly familiar; a new world filled with magic, prophecy and no small amount of danger.
She wouldn't have it any other way...
HH: What do you have in store for readers in 2008? KA: With any luck, I'll have Darkenbane up and ready to roll in January or February of 2008. I am also working on a play called Dark Light, but that will be completed after my current romance novel, because that is where my passion lies right now.
HH: How did you get your start as a writer? KA: I have been writing stories for my friends since high school, and I hope I never get famous because they have some pretty embarrassing tales I penned about Duran Duran and everything else we loved back then. The Medallion of Solaus is my first submission to a publisher, and I was very lucky to find someone for it right away. Black Lyon Publishing really took me in under their wing and treated me so very well.
HH: What do you still love about writing now? KA: Oh, I deeply love the characters I write about and the worlds they live in. If magic can still be created in the modern day world, surely the places I discover in my mind and put on paper hold no small amount of that.
HH: Where and when do you feel you do your best work? KA: I write best with a glass of wine, some candles and incense... It has to be really quiet when I write. When the phone rings or someone comes in, it almost feels like I'm being ripped away, awakened from a dream and it is difficult to adjust.
HH: What would you like readers to know about you? KA: I'm a really nice person that loves to talk about ideas. I play World of Warcraft and I often sit around the campfire in game and trade heroic tales of magic and wonder. I wish everyone who read my writing would come over to my website or send me an email so I could see what makes them love the romance genre and believe in magic as much as I do.
HH: Thank you!
